Will Furse,
who led
Laurence Manning Academy to two SCISA AAAA football state championship games in his two seasons in charge of the program, has been hired as the new football coach and athletic director at
Lee Academy in
Bishopville.
Furse replaces David Rankin in both positions. Rankin stepped down last month after 11 years at Lee to become the head football coach, athletic director and assistant head of school at Carolina Academy in Lake City.
Furse was introduced by Lee head of school Brad Bochette on Thursday at the school.
Furse said Lee Academy reached out to him and asked if he had any interest in filling the positions.
“It was a good opportunity I thought,” said Furse, who is a graduate of Laurence Manning. “It was a difficult decision, but the door opened and I had to see what was there. We started talking, and I thought it was a good place to be athletic director and it is a football program that has been successful.
“We met and next thing you know here we are.”
Furse was 19-7 in his two seasons as head coach at LMA. He guided the Swampcats to the AAAA state championship game both seasons, losing to 7-time defending state champion Hammond each time. Laurence Manning dropped a 28-21 decision this past season.
Furse inherits a program that enjoyed tremendous success under Rankin. The Cavaliers have played for the Class A state title each of the past four seasons and in six of the past nine years. Lee won championships in 2015 and 2022 and posted an 89-26 record over the past nine seasons.
"Coach Rankin did a great job building the program,” Furse said. “He’s been a good friend for a long time, and I’ve learned a lot from him. I just felt like it was a really good situation.
“I know I’m replacing the greatest coach in Lee history, so there’s some pressure. But I put a lot of pressure on myself as well. I know there are extremely high expectations, and I hope to live up to those.”
Bochette believes Furse will help carry on the athletic success Lee has enjoyed.
“We are very excited to have him and will give him all the support that we can give in order for him and our programs to be successful,” Bochette said.
Laurence Manning headmaster Tripp Boykin said Furse did a tremendous job in both of his roles.
"No doubt, we will miss Mr. Furse being with us next year, but we are so grateful for the great work he has done here at his alma mater," Boykin said in a statement. "He leaves us in excellent shape for the future, and he certainly has had a tremendous and positive impact not only on our players, but also on our faculty, staff and school family. We will now confidently begin the process of searching for our next great coach and athletic director to continue building on what Mr. Furse has done and to continue the rich traditions of competition, success and excellence at Laurence Manning.
"We wish Mr. Furse the absolute best at Lee Academy. They are getting a great man, coach and mentor."
“I will always have a special place in my heart for Laurence Manning,” Furse said. “It is a special place. I was the head coach for two years and for five years I was an assistant. I’m proud of what we did, the athletes we had. The football team, they'll be fine. They’ll find a very good, quality head coach. I wish them my best.”
