By Dennis Brunson hssr.com Associate Editor Florence -- It’s not a case of all good things coming to an end for the Florence Christian School volleyball team. However, the Eagles are definitely taking a different route this season than in the recent past. Having lost just 19 matches over the six previous seasons, FCS was off to an 8-8-2 start this season. Veteran head coach Denise Carter attributes that to something called graduation. “We lost our senior leaders from last year,” said Carter, who is in her eighth season and has led Florence Christian to the SCISA AAA state championship match the past two seasons. “We are still trying to find that chemistry that is needed to be our best on the court. We are just not consistent with that at the present time.” The Eagles have seven key returnees from last season led by Jada Porter and Jenna Prevatte . Porter, who was an All-Region selection last year, finished with 43 aces, 210 kills, 43 blocks and 125 digs. Prevatte led FCS in assists with 478 to go with 24 aces. Daisy Carter had 88 digs and 15 aces, Demi Greene had 17 aces, Lareen Rishmawi had 26 kills and 13 blocks, Susanna Lee had 16 kills and three blocks, and Anna Kate Huggins had 10 kills. The other returners from last year at Lyla Broach and Lily Altman . The two newcomers are Eden Guthrie and Anna Kate Bazen . Carter hopes the best is yet to come for her squad, like around the AAA state tournament in Myrtle Beach on October 18-19. “We are working hard daily to improve with every opportunity we have,” she said. “Our goal is to play the best we can and hope we peak at the right time.” FCS FOOTBALL TEAM 3-3 Florence Christian was off to a 3-3 start following a 15-14 overtime loss to Wilson Hall. That was FCS’ Region 2-AAA opener. It has region contests remaining with Camden Military on October 11, Northside Christian Academy on October 25 and Trinity Collegiate on November 1. The Eagles are led by freshman quarterback Riley Minton . He has completed 37 of 63 passes for 457 yards and four touchdowns. Andrew Miller was leading in rushing with 390 yards and three touchdowns on 83 carries. Brooks Poston had seven catches for 147 yards and one TD, while Dylan Fredrick had four catches for 121 yards and two TDs. Dawson Anderson led FCS in tackles with 44 and tackles for loss with four. Poston and Austin Johnson both had two interceptions.
