Mt. Pleasant - Wando’s third win of the 2024 season was its biggest as the Warriors knocked off area rival Wes Ashley, 21-7.
The Warriors improved to 3-2 under first-year head coach Isaiah Perrin. West Ashley lost its second straight, falling to 2-3 on the season.
Wando’s previous two wins came against Horry County AAAAA schools, Socastee and St. James, but Perrin says winning a game against a local school means a little more as he rebuilds his program.
“We appreciate every win we can get but we talked all week about making a statement in the Lowcountry,” Perrin said. “We wanted to serve notice that this is not the old Wando. Our kids are going to play hard and we’re going to play to the end. This is an important win as we work towards bigger things.”
Harris Stone threw a pair of touchdown passes to Cole Fletcher, who also recorded an interception on defense to lead the Wando effort. Stone also combined for a 67-yard touchdown to tight end Brock Feinberg.
Wando got on the board first, midway through the first quarter, when Stone and Fletcher combined on a 34-yard touchdown pass for a 7-0 lead.
The Warriors’ Matt Payes blocked a punt in the second quarter and reached the West Ashley one-yard line before the Wildcats stopped a scoring threat on fourth-and-goal.
Late in the first half, Fletcher picked off a pass near midfield, setting up a crucial late score. Again it was Stone to Fletcher from 10 yards out, pushing Wando to a 14-0 halftime lead.
“We saw some things on film that we felt we could take advantage of in the passing game,” Perrin said.
West Ashley best drive of the game came in the third quarter and resulted in a David Dounian one-yard touchdown run to trim the Wando lead to 14-7 with 3:50 left in the third.
Wando, however, responded with the touchdown pass to Feinberg to push the lead to 21-7 with 9:39 left in the game.
Wando will enjoy a bye next week before opening region play against Goose Creek on Oct.4.
