Summerton – Long before there was Name, Image and Likeness in college athletics, there was the Newport News Apprentice School athletics program.
Newport News is a shipbuilding school located in Newport News, Virginia, in which the students are actually paid a salary as they learn their particular trades while they get the opportunity to play collegiate sports. Siara Lundy of Scott’s Branch High School will be plying her skill as a certified welder while having the opportunity to play NCAA Division III basketball.
“It means a lot to me to get to play college basketball,” Lundy said. “It’s all I’ve ever wanted to do. It’ a dream come true.”
Lundy played both guard positions for the Eagles, who finished with a 13-10 record and second in Region 5-Class A while reaching the second of the state playoffs. Lundy led the team in assists at 3.2 per game and was second in both scoring at 10.0 and rebounds at 5.7. She averaged 2.4 steals as well.
SBHS head coach Lucinda Stukes said Lundy was a leader in many ways.
“She’s always had that level of leadership,” Stukes said of Lundy, who played for Scott’s Branch the last two years after being on the Manning High varsity as a freshman and sophomore. “She stepped up for us when we needed her to score more. She’s always had a point guard mentality, being more o a facilitator.”
As for the welding, Lundy said she became intrigued with it while attending Clarendon County School District’s F.E. DuBose Caree Center in Manning.
“I started doing welding and liked it,” she said. “I took it again and graduated from there.
“I feel like it’s good for me (to go to Newport News). It will be an adjustment, but it is one I can handle.”
Lundy was selected to the All-Region 5 team along with eighth-grade teammate Trayiona Maxfield and junior Saniya House.
Maxfield led the Eagles in scoring at 12.3 points to go with 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals. House averaged 4.9 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.7 steals.
MILLER NO LONGER BOYS BASKETBALL COACH
Kevin Miller, who is two seasons removed from having led the Scott’s Branch boys basketball team to four straight state championship games, has been relieved of his duties.
Scott’s Branch was the Lower State champion from 2020 through 2023. The Eagles went 12-11 in 2024 before going just 6-16 in the just completed season.
