Stephen Burris set for second season as head coach

`Lamar -- Stephen Burris has a successful first season as the football head coach at Lamar

High School. The Silver Foxes went 9-4 on the season, winning the Region 6-Class A title and advancing to the third round of the state playoffs.

Burris, who is the offensive coordinator and coaches quarterbacks, has his entire staff back for his second year in Rob Joye, Hayden Wilks, Brian Scott, Jason Myers, Jimmy Woods and Allen Poole.

Myers is the defensive coordinator and physically brings a lot more to the table for Lamar.

“He’s our in-house chef,” Burris said of Myers. “He prepares all of our pregame meals, and he’s a home run DC that brings all of the intangibles to our program.”

Joye is a Lamar graduate who coaches running backs and serves as a liaison between the student-athletes and the coaching staff.

“He’s a Silver Fox through and through,” Burris said of Joye. “He’s our connection to the kids in

things having to do nothing with football in a lot of cases. He fills in a lot of blanks and helps us maintain cohesiveness.”

Wilks is the offensive line coach. “He’s my right hand and is one of the best offensive line

coaches in the state,” Burris said. “My goal every day is to beat him to the school.”

Scott is a former standout wide receiver at the University of South Carolina. He coaches wide receivers and defensive backs.

“The living legend,” Burris said of Scott, who is also the boys basketball head coach. “He does a great job bringing energy to our program.”

Woods, who has over three decades of coaching experience, handles the defensive line. “I rely on Coach Woods for advice on being a head coach and leading a program,: Burris said. “Irreplaceable.”

Poole is the linebackers coach and “he is the lifeblood of all we do,” Burris said. “The stadium is

named after his father (Donald R. Poole Stadium for the longtime Lamar head coach). There’s not a soul in Lamar that doesn’t love AP. He’s the MVP of the entire organization.”

Adam Fedawa is set to return as the baseball coach. Francis Humphrey will be the boys and

girls cross country coach, Alan Hunter will handle volleyball, Shane Brantley will be the softball coach, Myers will be the boys and girls track and field coach, and Wilks will be the boys golf coach.

Randolph Scott is back as the girls basketball head coach, and Carlos Burgess is the athletic director.
