Goose Creek - Due to Hurricane Helene and the rains it brought to the Lowcountry, there was only one public school football game played in the Charleston area on Friday.
In that contest, fourth-ranked Summerville remained undefeated with a solid 43-21 win over Goose Creek.
The game was one of only a handful of games played around the state and Goose Creek’s John Fulmer Field held up well.
Summerville quarterback Jaden Cummings threw four touchdown passes and rushed for another to pace the Green Wave’s explosive offense. Cummings connected twice on touchdown passes to Green Wave star Keshon Washington, who had more than 150 receiving yards in the first half. Washington finished the game with more than 200 all-purpose yards.
Cummings also threw a touchdown pass to Jaiden Kelly-Murray and scored on a one-yard sneak to give the Green Wave a 30-7 lead midway through the third quarter.
The game was tied at 7-7 after each team scored on a touchdown pass in the first quarter/ Cummings hit Keshon Washington (55 yards) with their first score and Goose Creek quarterback Kymani Clary connected with Jerue Davis from 47 yards out.
“I liked the way we started the game in all three phases,” Summerville coach Ian Rafferty said. “We have a dynamic offense but let me tell you, Goose Creek has a really good defense, They had our quarterback on the run all night. We can score at anytime. We just have to stop doing dumb stuff.”
Summerville took control of the game in the second period, tacking on a field goal and two touchdowns to claim a 24-7 halftime lead. Washington turned a short pass in the middle into an 80-yard score.
Trailing by 30-7, the Gators assembled a solid scoring drive late in the third quarter with Clary keeping on a two-yard run.
The game was marred by penalties, an estimated 30 total.
Summerville improved to 5-0 on the season while Goose Creek fell to 2-3. Both teams begin region play next week as the Green Wave take on Stall and the Gators face city rival Stratford.
