Dillon — Ryan Carter is a rising senior honor student athlete at Dillon High School where he has been starting on the Wildcat baseball team since his 8th grade season.
Carter has been chosen the May “NETC Male Student Athlete of the Month.”
This honor is bestowed through a partnership between the Northeastern Technical College and “The High School Sports Report” with the publication communicating with athletic directors at high schools in the counties of Dillon, Marlboro, and Chesterfield, where NETC serves the needs of high school students seeking to earn dual credits in various subjects that can be transferred to other colleges after a student’s high school graduation.
“I have been playing baseball since I was four-years old,” said Carter who had two older brothers play baseball at Coastal Carolina and The College of Charleston. “I love playing catcher because I get to the touch the ball on every play. The challenge is not to mess up.
“My participation in baseball has helped me make many friends and I like competition very much,” said Ryan “If it is in the cards, I would welcome the opportunity to play at the next level after high school.”
Keith Coward, is the Dillon head baseball coach, and athletic director at the school as of July, 1 said this about Carter. “I have a 10-year-old son and I would be very pleased when he is a rising senior if he has the character and integrity that Ryan Carter possesses,” said Coach Coward.
The HSSR caught with Carter while he was attending Palmetto Boy’s State in mid-June. He carries a 5.215 GPA into his senior year and he is on schedule to become the Valedictorian at Dillon High next year.
“I have taken numerous online courses through the “NETC” and what students in the three-county area need to understand is that online advanced courses weigh more when they are factored into your GPA,” said Carter. “This has certainly helped me improve my GPA that will help me earn more scholarship funds as I apply to colleges.
“Also, all the papers I am required to prepare along with these online courses, offered by the NETC”, are teaching me how to properly format them based on what colleges will require you to use when you do enroll at a later date,” said Carter. “I feel like it is in the best interest of all students in the “NETC” coverage area to enroll in as many online courses as possible.”
To date, Carter has taken these online courses from the “NETC”: Western Civilization, American History, Art History 101, World Geography, Music Appreciation, Introduction To Theatre, English 101, and Spanish 101.
Carter said he will be applying to West Point, The Citadel, and Clemson.
“I am presently undetermined on my major but I am leaning towards Civil Engineering right now,” he said. “Without a doubt taking online courses from the “NETC” has helped me become better prepared for college in many ways.”
