Central High’s Cooper Catoe Named The NETC Male Student Athlete of the Month
Pageland—Cooper Catoe is a senior baseball player at Central of Pageland High School where he has performed well as a designated hitter, right- handed pitcher and first baseman over his three years on the Eagles varsity baseball team.
Catoe is also an excellent student in the class room. He is carrying a 3.967 GPA into his final semester of high school.
For all his athletic and academic accomplishments, Catoe has been chosen the January “NETC Male Student Athlete of the Month.”
This honor is bestowed through a partnership between the Northeastern Technical College and “The High School Sports Report” with the publication communicating with athletic directors at high schools in the counties of Dillon, Marlboro, and Chesterfield, where NETC serves the needs of high school students seeking to earn dual credits in various subjects that can be transferred to colleges after a student’s high school graduation.
Catoe’s GPA, and his excellent academic status, has been greatly improved by his participation in 10 online courses offered through the “NETC” based in Cheraw, S.C. Entering the second semester of his senior year, Catoe has taken Sociology 101, Spanish 101, History 201, Phycology 201, Theater 101, Economics 210, Biology 101, CRJ 101, English 101, and Math 110.
“My goal in baseball is to always do better both individually, and as a team, the nest season,” said Catoe. “I always tell myself to do better.
“I try to be a role model for my teammates and keeping up my grades and doing things the right way is very important to me,” said Catoe.
Catoe has a unique perspective on the importance of his fellow students, in the region, taking online dual credit courses through the “NETC”.”I learn better when I feel like I am teaching myself as opposed to sitting in a class room with a group of my fellow students,” he said. “I do better with online courses because I feel like I am thinking for myself as opposed to doing what everyone else is doing in a class room setting.
“When I take online courses through the “NETC” I feel like I am taking courses on the college level, not the high school level,” said Catoe. “I feel more challenged by the online courses.
“I would encourage all high school students in the area to take online courses to get ahead in their academic pursuits,” said Catoe. “It has really helped better prepare me for college.”
Catoe is seeking a major in Business at the next level in college. “My father owns an insurance business so I would like to figure out how to one day run my own insurance business also,” he said. “I would like to major in Business at either USC Lancaster or at the “NETC.”
Catoe said he would also love the opportunity to play baseball in college. “I have been playing baseball since I was two years old and it would be great if I could have the opportunity to keep playing the sport once I get to college,” he said.
