Moncks Corner – It’s not a matter of “if” but more so “when” the schools in the upper part of the state can return to normalcy in the wake of the destructive storm that was Hurricane Helene that blasted through the state on Sept. 26-27.
To be honest, football is secondary to people returning to their homes, with food and power and running hot water. But high school football is very important. It can serve as a distraction and a rallying point for small and large communities alike.
So, there will be football again at some point, which means there will be state playoffs. It may start a little later than scheduled but it is most assuredly coming.
In Class AA, there are a significant number of schools that are affected and have already missed games. Down in the Lower State, all is well and good. But in the area through the midlands, the Lakelands area, and in the upper reaches of the state, there are still locks on the school doors. Again, take heart. It will all be okay.
Let’s take a look at what Class AA looks like as it stands today and how it might look come playoff time.
In Region One, the Clinton Red Devils look like the best team and has the potential to contend for a state championship. Clinton has early losses to AAA Woodruff (undefeated) and defending state champion Daniel (one loss).
Quarterback Tashawan Richardson makes it all go for the offense with James Cook adding a major threat in the run game. Clinton (3-2) has six backs with more than 150 yards rushing.
The two most competitive regions in AA, top to bottom, are region two in the upstate and region six in the Lower State.
Region Two had three teams ranked in the AA top 10 when the storm halted play. Batesburg-Leesville is 5-0, Saluda is 4-0 and Strom Thurmond is 3-1. All three schools were hit fairly hard by the storm and will have some makeup work to do.
Among Batesburg-Leesville’s early wins was a two-point decision At Abbeville in week three. That doesn’t happen often.
“They’re a very good, fast, well-coached football team and they will win a lot of games,” Abbeville head coach Jamie Nickles said.
Saluda is a bit untested early but those Tigers are really good on defense.
Fairfield-Central should run away with the region three title (I’m sure they love reading that). But it’s true. The Griffins are 5-1 and coasting with a talented group of athletes. Running back Tydarion Grier, a SC Shrine Bowl selectee, is nearing 1,000 yards and has 13 rushing touchdowns.
In Region Four, Central of Pageland is off to a 4-1 start and looks to be a solid contender. Chesterfield started off 5-0 but lost their region opener to North Central. Cheraw is definitely a worthy team to consider as well but I don’t get the feeling any of the teams from the region can make a run at the state title.
Take your pick as the favorite in the Lower State cause several teams have a shot. Barnwell and Hampton County will decide region five on Oct. 18 and both teams have a legit shot to advance to the finals. Quarterback play is key and both teams have good, veteran guys.
Region Six is highly competitive among the top four teams and my bet is none goes unscathed through the league schedule.
Philip Simmons, Timberland, Andrews and Woodland have enough to win the league. Philip Simmons got a win over Woodland in the region opener so they will own that tie-breaker.
Timberland faces the toughest test. Their last three region games are Andrews, Philip Simmons and Woodland. Buckle up!
Manning and Mullins each have one loss and play each other in region 7-AA on Oct. 11. Winner likely comes away with the region title, barring any upsets.
