St. Stephen – On Friday nigh at Timberland High School, one of the great traditions of the high
school football season took place, it was Homecoming and the Wolves made sure it was a happy one
as they defeated Bishop England 35-14.
The game was also the region opener for both teams. With the win, the Wolves moved to 1-0 in
region play and 2-5 overall, while the Battling Bishops fell to 0-1 and 0-5.
“We are starting to play more consistently, and I like the direction we are headed,” said
Timberland head coach Greg Wright. “We played a tough non-region schedule to get us ready
and we came out with one of our better performances this year.”
Bishop England struck first as freshmen quarterback William Donato hit Jacob Mackara with a
50-yard scoring strike. Cavin Craig added the extra point, and the Battling Bishops were up 7-0..
The Wolves would score the next 35 points to put the game away and secure the win.
The Wolves' first score of the game came as Kalen Brown and J’Vaarez Sumpter hooked up for
their first score of the night when Sumpter made a Sports Center highlight catch. Aiden Berrios tacked
on the point after and the game was tied.
On the catch, a Bishop England defender tipped the ball, then Sumpter tipped it twice and then
grab the ball as he fell into the end zone.
Brown to Sumpter struck again on the Wolves' next possession as Brown hit Sumpter with a
swing pass and Sumpter made two people miss for a 37-yard scoring strike and a 14-7 lead.
After the Wolves' Xavier Hampton picked off a Battling Bishop pass. Brown would cap off a
26-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown run and the lead was 21-7.
The Wolves would strike again right before half when Brown found Rashod White for a 14-
yard touchdown toss. On the drive, White had three receptions for 41 yards. The point after by
Berrios sent the Wolves to half leading 28-7.
Timberland would strike again on its first possession of the second half when Brown hit
Sumpter again, this time from five yards out, and the lead was 35-7.
Bishop England got on the board one more time. After a Timberland fumble was recovered by
Bishop England at the Wolves 4-yard line, Dixon Hardy would punch it in from the 5, making 35-14.
Brown had an outstanding night, going 15-for-21 for 224 yards and four scores while also rushing for
41 yards and a score. Sumpter was his top target as he finished with nine receptions for 127 yards
and three touchdowns.
Timberland heads to Charleston next week to take on Academic Magnet, while Bishop England
will host Lake Marion.
