Jevon Edwards, Terrence Smith lead South Aiken to 41-30 win over AAA No. 6 Clinton

         Aiken – The South Aiken High School football team pulled off a big upset for its first win of the season on Friday, taking down Clinton 41-30 at the SAHS field.

 

         The Thoroughbreds improved to 1-5. The Red Devils, ranked sixth in the High School Sports Report Sweet 16 AAA poll, lost for the second straight week to fall to 4-2.

 

         Jevon Edwards rushed for 199 yards and three touchdowns on 35 carries to lead South Aiken. Quarterback Terrence Smith ran for 161 yards and a TD on 16 carries and completed 8 of 10 passes for 141 yards and two scores.

 

         Malik Scurry had five cafche for 98 yards and a TD, and Ryan Lubek had three catches for 43 yards and a TD/.

 

         Clinton quarterback Tushawan Richardson rushed for 152 yards on seven carries and threw a 52-yard TD pass to Austin Boyd. Tray Cook had 10 carries for 96 yards, and Javen Cook ran for 70 yards and two TDs on seven carries.


Manning 64

Baptist Hill 14

 

         Hollywood Manning High School remained undefeated on the season with a 64-14 win over Baptist Hill on Friday at the BHHS field.

 

         The Monarchs, who improved to 5-0 and are ranked 10th in AAA, ran for 358 yards. Triston Thames led the way with 144 yards and a touchdown on eight carries. Jaylnn Coard had five carries for 99 yards and three TDs, James Montgomery had 67 yards on three carries, and quarterback JaRae Mitchell had four carries for 36 yards and a TD.

 

         Mitchell completed 2 of 5 passes for 35 yards and a TD. Jeffrey Ceasar had both of the catches.

 

         Defensively, Ceasar had four tackles and an interception. Jontavious Canty and Daquan McFadden also had interceptions.

 

         Gilbert 49

         Saluda 27

 

         Gilbert Gilbert scored 28 points in the third quarter to take control of the game and go on to a 49-27 victory over Saluda on Friday at the GHS field.

 

         The Indians, ranked third in AAA and now 5-0, trailed 19-14 at halftime. Saluda, ranked sixth in AA, fell to 4-1.

 

         Gilbert quarterback Drake Braddock completed 12 of 19 passes for 263 yards and four touchdowns. Running back Jaylen Jay had five catches for 143 yards and two TDs,, and Connor Gooding had three catches for 38 yards and a TD. Krew Morris had the other TD catch among his two receptions for 36 yards.

 

         Jay rushed for 114 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries.

 

         Drew Arant completed 19 of 28 passes for 227 yards and three touchdowns for Saluda. Josh Uhler had six catches for for 128 yards and a TD, Victavis Gaines had five catches for 27 yards and a TD, and JT Lott had two catches for 49 yards and a score.

 

         KenMane Brunson ran for 60 yards on seven carries. Brayden Williams returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown.

 

         Carolina Forest 42

         North Myrtle Beach 20

 

         North Myrtle Beach Carolina Forest led 28-7 at halftime on the way to a 42-20 victory over North Myrtle Beach on Friday at The Hank.

 

         Kalil Johnson rushed for 183 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries to lead the 3-3 Panthers. Quarterback Ethan Hamilton rushed for 126 yards and two TDs on eight carries.

 

         Landon Cloninger led the Chiefs by completing 17 of 30 passes for 207 yards and two TDs. Kaden Gore had five cagtches for 95 yards. Evans Bellamy rushed for 74 yards on 12 carries.

 

         Jonathan Rivas and Charles McCray both had seven tackles to lead the CFHS defense. Antwerp Diamond had four tackles, two quarterback sacks and two tackles for loss.

 

         Trenton Fredericks had 10 tackles for NMB, which fell to 3-3. Sloan McIntyre had eight tackles and two TFLs.

 

         Lake View 15

         Loris 14

 

         Lake View Lake View scored the game’s final 15 points to come away with a 15-14 victory over Loris on Friday at the LVHS field.

 

         Loris, ranked 13th in AAA, took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 20-yard pass from Jackson Huff to Quantez Dyson and Jaggers Suggs adding the extra point. Loris made it 14-0 on a 6-yard TD run by Jordan Vancise.

 

         Lake View, No. 8 in Class A, got its first score on a 3-yard run by Jayden Ford in the third quarter. Quarterback Kason Herlong ran for the 2-point conversion to make it 14-8.

 

         Lake View, which improved to 4-1, won the game with Herlong throwing his only completion of the game for a 13-yard TD to Ford. Seth Deese added the PAT for the winning point.

 

         Vancise led 3-1 Loris, rushing for 92 yards and the TD on 21 carries. Dyson had two catches for 60 yards.

 

         Tyrell Foxworth rushed for 56 yards on 18 carries for Lake View.

 

         Newberry 21

         Keenan 14

         

         Newberry Newberry High School won its Region 4-AA opener with a 21-14 triumph over Keenan on Friday at the NHS field.

 

         The Indians improved to 2-3 on the season. Keenan fell to 1-4 and 0-2.

 

         Kennan’s Quindarius McMillian returned a fumble for a touchdown and had seven tackles. Ny’Keim McNeil had 10 tackles, four tackles for loss and an interception.

 

         Tyreik Davenport-Smith, Nigel Williams and B.J. Flemming had two TFLs apiece. Flemming also had a sack, and Jaziah Maia had an interception.

 

         T.L. Hanna 48

         Laurens 6

 

         Anderson -- T.L. Hanna improved to 5-1 with a 48-6 victory over Laurens on Friday at the Hanna field.


       T.L. Hanna rushed for over 400 yards, led by KD Patterson with 181 yards and two TDs on eight carries. Vashun Burton ran for 80 yards and a touchdown on seven carries and caught a 16-yard TD pass from Brandon Cunningham. Triston Carroll ran for 82 yards and a TD on five carries and Josh Donald ran for 75 yards on seven carries.

 

         Daylan Williams returned an interception for a touchdown for the Yellow Jackets.

 

Andrews 46

Green Sea Floyds 8

 

         Green Sea – After Green Sea Floyds scored the game’s first touchdown, Andrews scored the final 46 points in a 45-8 victory on Friday at the GSF field.

 

         Quarterback Brandon Cumbee led Andrews, 4-2 and ranked 16th in AA, rushing for 81 yards and a TD on 11 carries while completing 2 of 3 passes for 84 yards and two scores. AJ Lee ran for 111 yards and a TD and caught a 14-yard TD pass.

 

         Aarin Moore had a 70-yard TD catch, while Xavier Anderson ran for 35 yards and two scores on seven carries.

 

         Aden Cooper led the Andrews defense with nine tackles while recovering a fumble. Chris Stewart had five tackles, two TFLs and a forced fumble. Jacolby Sanders had six tackles, 1 ½ TFLs and a fumble recovery.

 

        White Knoll 42

         Lancaster 6

 

         Lancaster Landon Sharpe completed 15 of 17 passes for 217 yards and four touchdowns to lead undefeated White Knoll to a 42-6 win over Lancaster on Friday at the LHS field.

 

         Sharpe also ran for a touchdown to lead the Wolves, ranked 10th in AAAAA and now 5-0. Evan Henderson had five catches for 78 yards and two TDs, while CJ Earl had three catches for 45 yards and a score. Tyson Cox had a 9-yard TD catch, and Tiyon Fanning had 84 yards rushing and a TD on 13 carries while catching two passes for 26 yards.

 

         Ledarius Cloud ran for 102 yards on 14 carries for the Bruins, who dropped to 0-5. RJ Brown ran for 81 yards on 22 carries.

 

         WKHS’ Lincoln Ilunga had a big night on defense. He finished with nine tackles, 4 ½ TFLs, a sack and a forced fumble. Tyler Stoudemire had eight tackles, a sack, a TFL and a forced fumble, and Demenico Banks and Devin Geronomi both had a blocked punt.

 

Dillon 44

Marlboro County 0

 

         Bennettsville – Dillon rolled up 405 yards of total offense and held Marlboro County to 117 in a 44-0 win on Friday at the MCHS field.

 

         Jamarrion Fling rushed for 120 yards and five TDs on 14 carries for the Wildcats, who improved to 4-1. Dominick Felton had 152 yards and a TD on 12 carries.

 

         Fling also had a 36-yard reception and an interception on defense.

 

         Sirmod McCallum led the DHS defense with 11 tackles. Wayvon Bright had six tackles, a sack, a TFL and a tackle for a safety.

 

         Stephen Rojas was 6-for-6 on extra points and had two touchbacks on six kickoffs.

 

         Easley 38

         Southside 12

 

         Greenville Logan Sullivan rushed for 173 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries to lead Easley to a 38-12 victory over Southside on Friday at the SHS field.


Easley improved to 2-3 while Southside fell to 0-5.

 

         Jay Stoker completed 12 of 20 passes for 118 yards and a score while running for two TDs. Will Patton caught 11 passes for 102 yards and a TD and had a 27-yard TD run.

 

         Zeah Rodriguez was 5-for-5 on PATs and had a field goal to go with a 42-yard punt.

 

Byrnes 49

West Florence 9

 

         Duncan Byrnes High School rolled up 492 yards of total offense on the way to a 49-0 triumph over West Florence on Friday at the BHS field.

 

         The 5-1 Rebels, ranked third in AAAAA, ran for 312 yards and five TDs. Dreson Evans scored twice, rushing for 80 yards on four carries. Tre Segarra had 81 yards and a TD, Zy Landrum had 59 yards and a score, and Tyleik Dawkins had 48 yards and a score.

 

         Quarterback Andrew Stevens completed 10 of 17 passes for 180 yards and two TDs. Armoni Weaver had two catches for 88 yards and a score, and Segarra had a 17-yard TD catch. Chamarryus Bomar had four catches for 49 yards.


West Florence, ninth in AAAA, fell to 3-2.

 

         Weddington (N.C.) 17

         Dutch Fork 14

 

         Irmo Weddington High School scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to pull out a 17-14 win over Dutch Fork on Friday at Dutch Fork Stadium.

 

         The Silver Foxes, ranked ninth in AAAAA, fell to 2-4, while Weddington, out of Matthews, North Carolina, improved to 5-1.

 

         Ethan Offing completed 11 of 26 passes for 120 yards and a TD while rushing for 45 yards on 11 carries to lead Dutch Fork. Trent Lodge had four catches for 94 yards and a TD while running for 28 yards on five carries.

 

         Maurice Anderson had 33 rushing yards and a TD.

 

         Deon Winsley had nine tackles to lead the Dutch Fork defense. Elgin Sessions had seven tackles, an interception and forced a fumble. Derek Smith had an interception and Josh Smith had two TFLs.

 

         Northwestern 56

         Rock Hill 14

 

         Rock Hill Northwestern High School rolled up 659 yards of total offense in a 56-14 victory over Rock Hill on Friday at District 3 Stadium.

 

         The Trojans, ranked No. 1 in AAAA, improved to 4-1. They got big games from quarterback Finley Polk, running back Turbo Richard and athlete Greer Hopkins.

 

         Polk completed 16 of 24 passes for 212 yards and three touchdowns while rushing 86 yards and three TDs on 15 carries. Richard carried the ball 24 times for 184 yards and a TD. Hopkins had seven carries for 143 yards and a TD while coming up with five catches for 69 yards and a TD.

 

         Jayden Burris had two catches for 41 yards and a TD, and Jaylen Burris had two catches for 20 yards and a TD,

 

         Andre Pickett had nine tackles, four TFLs and a sack to lead the Northwestern defense. Jeremiah Grant had six tackles, three TFLs and 1 ½ sacks.

 

         Matthew Wilson completed 13 of 34 passes for 169 yards and a TD to lead the Bearcats. Z’Mori Thompson had three catches for 73 yards and a TD.

 

         Whale Branch 45

         Battery Creek 12

 

         Beaufort -- Whale Branch improved to 4-0 with a 45-12 victory over Battery Creek on Friday at the WBHS field.

 

         Whale Branch, ranked 14th in Class A, rushed for 456 yards. KJ Chisolm had 161 yards on 19 carries while Bradford Thompson had 101 yards on five carries. Darrell Cummings had nine carries for 87 yards, and Jayvion Harris had 74 yards on seven carries.

 

         Chester 38

         Batesburg-Leesville 18

 

         Batesburg-Leesville -- Chester High School improved to 5-1 with a 38-18 win over Batesburg-Leesville on Friday at the BLHS field.

 

         B-L, which fell to 2-3, led 18-16 at halftime but was outscored 22-0 in the second half.

 

         Chester, ranked seventh in AAA and now 5-1, was led by Elijah Coleman. He rushed for 190 yards and four touchdowns 23 carries while coming up with two catches for 20 yards. Trooper Floyd completed 8 of 15 passes for 63 yards.

 

         KD Whitt caught a 78-yard touchdown pass from Tanner Watkins for the Panthers. Amadre Wooden returned a kickoff 94 yards for a TD, and Felipe Juarez-Diaz booted a 27-yard field goal.

 

         Bethesda Academy 48

         Palmetto Christian 0

 

         Mt. Pleasant Bethesda Academy improved to 6-0 with a 48-0 win over Palmetto Christian Academy on Friday at the PCA field.

 

         Triston Randall led Bethesda, ranked third in the HSSR SCISA Pick 6 AA poll, by completing 7 of 10 passes for 213 yards and three touchdowns. Noah Jenkins carried the football 18 times for 160 yards.

         

         Thomas Peters had four catches for 100 yards and Raleigh Wesley had an 86-yard TD catch.

Baker Publisher Hopkins —The Gray Collegiate War Eagles edged out tradition rich Bishop England (75-72) and 30 other AA girl’s track teams, to earn the school’s first SCHSL Track & Field state championship hosted by Lower Richland High School on May, 18. The next 10 teams in the AA girl’s finals were: Fairfield Central (59), Oceanside Collegiate (50), Woodland (48), Hampton County (42), Greer Middle College (38.5) Landrum (36) Mid-Carolina (34.5), Academic Magnet (28), Keenan (24), and Marion (23). Bishop England, coached by Tony Colizzi , had been seeking their 14th state title. Gray Collegiate, won the state title with just 9 state qualifiers. The Griffins are coached by former Orangeburg-Wilkinson and Clemson track athlete Jackie Robinson . “The good thing is that we won as a team, and it was not just from one person,” said Coach Robinson. “It was everybody collectively, and all season long these ladies have sacrificed, and they did not complain while putting in the work. They came to work every practice and it paid off for them today. “To win a state championship it takes a lot of hard work and dedication and you have to put in the hours,” said Coach Robinson. “You have to be disciplined and true to your focus of self-improvement. Getting involved in year-round track programs certainly helps you to become better. Track has become a year-round sport now, and it takes a lot of hard work “I knew coming in we had a chance but only if we had several PR’s in a few events and it trusted each other to do our very best,” said Coach Robinson. “Winning a championship with only 9 state qualifiers is a testament to those young ladies. We have a lot of quality, but not quantity, on both our teams at Gray.” The War Eagles took three first place finishers in individual events from Tresta Miller in the 400 meters (58.33), Aubrey Guy in the 100-meter hurdles (15.42) and Tamara Steward in the 400-meter hurdles (1:05.00). Miller picked up two second place finishes for GC in the 100-meters (12.04) and the long jump (5.51m) producing 16 additional points for her team. Guy was third in the 400-hurdles ((1:08.60) and Steward was 5 th in the long jump (5.02m). Zaria Gaines contributed points in the 100-meters (12,57) and in the 200-meters (26,27) with a 7 th and 8 th place finish respectively. GC placed second in both the 4x100 (48.98) and the 4X100 Relay (3:27.82) to earn 16 total points. The 4X100 was ran by Steward, Gaines, Taylor Jones and Guy. The 4X400 was run by Steward, Amariah Gonzalez , Taylor Jones and Gaines. While Gray and BE competed back-and-forth throughout the even, Fairfield Central senior Sharmelle Holmes was dominating the competition once again, with three individual gold medals and another gold medal as a participant on the winning 4X100 relay. Holmes set a new state record in the 100-meters (11.45). when she ran the anchor leg. Holmes, She was first in the 200-meters (23.57) and took gold in the long jump (19-02.75). Holmes has signed to run track at Kentucky . She produced 32.5 points for her team and is the leading candidate for the 2024 HSSR-SCHSL Miss Track awards in South Carolina. After the majority of the gold medal winners left their moment of honor, on the victory podium at the meet, the HSSR asked them to share how they were able to beat the field in the respective event. Holmes was among the most enthusiastic performers interviewed. “This is the second year that I have won four gold medals and it makes all the hard work worthwhile,” said Holmes. “I participated in four individual events last year and this year I traded out the 100-hurdles to run anchor on the 4X100 relay. It’s a woo-woo moment for me with the state record! “I had hoped to set a state record but I will tell everybody who competed with me that it takes hard work to win gold medals at a state track meet,” said Holmes. “I am really grateful to God for all of my success. I am excited to be going on to the University of Kentucky. Go Wildcats!!” Tresta Miller (Gray Collegiate-junior) won the 400-meters (58.33 and she has a 57.01 personal best earlier this season) and she told the HSSR , “My goal is just to take off fast, maintain a steady speed, and leave something in the tank for a strong kick down the stretch,” she said. “Next year my goal is winning the 200 and the 400 and I hope to run a 55 flat in the 400 next seasons.” Freshman Aubrey Gray of Gray Collegiate won the 100-meter hurdles (15.42). “I would love to set a state record in the 100-hurdles by my senior year,” she said. “I also want to also be a double winner with a win the 400 hurdles in the future.” Batesburg Leesville’s sophomore Ja’Quan Corley won gold in the discus with a personal best of (157.01.75). “I would love to get a track scholarship by my senior year,” said Corley. “My technique is to always turn my left foot and get across the circle.” Oceanside Collegiate senior Joyce Siobhan was a double winner in the 1600-meters (4:59.03) and in the 3200 (11:06.09). She was proud of finally running a sub-five-minute 1600 that had been her goal all season. She will be running track at South Carolina next year. “My strategy is to stay near the front of the pack in either race and then kick it hard at the end,” said . “At South Carolina I will be more of a 5-K runner in cross country.” Oceanside Collegiate junior Kailen Kramer won the pole vault (3.80m). “My winning jump was 12’ 6” and I missed at my personal best attempt at 13’ 1”,” said Kramer. “My technique is not to slow down on my last few steps down the lane and hitting it hard, dropping my shoulders back and shooting for the sky ,” she said. “My goal is 14’ at the state meet next year and I would love to compete in college.” Senior Sinead Joyce of Oceanside Collegiate won the 800-meters (2:18.19) for the second year in a row. “I usually start out not super conservative but at a steady pace, but today I probably started out a little too fast,” she said. “I will be running at South Carolina next season. My goal is to respond to good college coaching and keep improving.” The AA girl’s shot put (10.77m) was won by Eau Claire junior Sytiria Bethel . “If feels great to see all the all- hard work pay off,” she said. “My goal by next year is 38 feet. My technique is using the power throw. I never change my technique.” Senior Sydney Price of Landrum won the Javelin toss (15.66m) for the third year in a row at the AA meet. “I have improved every year but today I threw around 128 feet and my personal best is 134,” said Price. “Everybody thinks it is your arm in throwing the Javelin but it really more the use of your hips and legs,” said Price. “Getting a good block and then throwing your hips into it is very important.” Price has actually signed to play softball at North Greenville College . She is a middle infielder with 30 career home runs. Keenan High senior Lauren Hannibal won the triple jump (11.02m). “I hit the board just right today on my final spring and I knew it was going to be among my best jumps ever and it was,” said Hannibal. “It feels great to go out with a gold medal my senior year.”

Baker Publisher Moncks Corner — In a Lower State AAAAA softball play-off game continued from a second inning rain-out the night before, (May, 15), between Berkeley (19-9) and Chapin (22-8) , the home standing Stags won a pitcher’s duel 2-0 to advance to play Summerville on May, 17. The Stags have a tall order on their plate needing to defeat the top-ranked Green Wave twice in order to advance. The state championship series is scheduled to begin on Monday at the upper state champion s home field. Game two will revert back to the lower state’s team home field on Wednesday. If a third game tie-breaker is needed it will be played at neutral site on Friday (May, 24). After the win Berkley head coach Kelly Dillon shared some thoughts with the HSSR. “In my tenure at Berkeley this is our third trip to the Lower state finals and I am so proud of my team and the adversity they have overcome this season,” said Coach Dillon. “We have had some adversity with the weather and we lost one of our key players to an injury recently ( Savannah Scott ) and we have remained tough and focused on our goals anyway. “We played small ball in the bottom of the 6th because when you need just one run to win you play to win,” said Coach Dillon. “I am very thankful; for a great bunting team. Every time I have asked for it to be put down, they have put it down so I am very proud to our commitment to the cause.” ( Courtlyn Cox delivered a perfect bunt that advanced the runner into scoring position in the bottom of the 6 th inning.) “We know we have a challenge going over to Summerville on Friday needing to win two games and you never know what might happen,” said Coach Dillon. “We are hungry and we are on a mission and we are playing moment to moment so we hope to at our best on Friday.” Chapin head coach Cal Sayger is wrapping up his 7 th season at Chapin. ”we have been fighting the weather all during the play-offs,” said Coach Sayger. “We just made too many mistakes in this game tonight. We have the program on sound footing. We have won back-to-back region titles and I very proud of the commitment all of our players have made to the success tour program.” Coach Sayger is saying good bye to four seniors. They include pitcher Aspen Mayers , Ella Maychiva k, third baseman Andree Dircks , and outfielder Alexia Evans . “These girls have been in the program since the e8th grade a d they will be missed,” said Coach Sayger. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the 6 th inning. The Stags Rileigh Ballentine led off with a single to center field. Courtlyn Cox’s Sac bunt moved Ballentine over to second base. She moved over to third, on a passed ball, while Brooklyn Moon was batting. Moon singled in Ballentine for the first run of the game. Ansley Riddle then doubled, barely missing a home run against the fence in deep center field. This hit put runners at second and third with one-out. An RBI ground-out by Camden Valicek scored Moon to give Berkeley all the runs they would need to win the game. Berkeley pitcher Reese Watson worked all seven innings, allowing only four hits. Watson’s six strike-outs in the game now gives her 201 on the season in 120 innings pitched with an ERA of 1.20.
