Summerton – Doc Lewis spent last year as the athletic director at Manning
High School. This year he will be the athletic director at another Clarendon
County School District high school in Scott’s Branch, and Lewis is fine with
that.
“It's really going well,” Lewis said. “It's the same, just a different school
building. I’ve really enjoyed getting to know the kids. It’s a good place to work.”
Lewis was on the Manning football staff the past few years under head
coach Reggie Kennedy. He will be part of the staff of second-year Eagles head
coach Randall State and will also help in the weight room.
“At a 1A (Class A) school you have to wear a lot of hats,” said Lewis, who
will continue to be the head coach of the Manning boys golf team.
With State in charge of football, Kevin Miller handling boys basketball and
boys track and field and Lucinda Stukes over the girls basketball program, Lewis
has three coaches in place who have enjoyed success and have experience.
“I have already found out that this is a group of coaches that will work,”
Lewis said. “They'lll do whatever it takes to be successful. It’s going to be a team
effort.”
State was hired as the football head coach in late June of 2022, just over a
month before the start of the season. State, who led Marion to the AA state
championship game a few years ago, led the Eagles to a 4-7 record as well as a
playoff berth
State will handle the offense while Miller will be the defensive coordinator.
The other assistants will be Paul Huggins, Kerry English, Derrick Weeks,
Kenneth Benjamin, Tim Palmer and Derrick Hastie.
Miller has been part of a staff that has helped lead the Scott’s Branch boys
basketball team to four straight Class A state championship games, the last two as
head coach. Stukes led the Lady Eagles to the 2019 Class A girls basketball state title.
Diane Walker will be the boys and girls cross country coach, Willette
Sheard is back as the softball coach, Tanika Bowman is the girls track coach and
Joey Henry will be the baseball coach. Scott’s Branch didn’t have a baseball team
last year and has struggled fielding one over the years.
“Joey is a parks and recreation guy with a lot of ties with the community”
Lewis said. “He has the ties to get the baseball program going. I don’t know if it
will be just varsity or just JV (junior varsity) this year, but we’re going to build it
on up as years go by. The kids are going to want to play for him. I’m excited about
it.”
