Pageland – The Central High School football team had 13 players named to the All-Region 5-AA team, seven of them seniors.
The Eagles who were selected are seniors Tyson Miller, Austin Middleton, Jacob Griffin, Denorris Wilson Jr., Justice Gingham, Petey Blakeney and Daniel Moore, juniors Tray Wilson and Dontavius Covington and sophomores Brandon Rollins, Ashten Wilson, MJ Allen and Sean Davis.
Miller and Middleton were selected as wide receivers. Miller had a team high 50 catches for 816 yards and four touchdowns, while Middleton had 40 catches for 545 yards and six touchdowns. Miller also returned a kickoff for a touchdown.
Griffin was the man getting the ball to Miller and Middleton. He completed 135 of 183 passes for 2,106 yards and 13 touchdowns while running for 349 yards and four touchdowns on 49 carries.
The other four of the seven senior selections were on defense. Denorris Wilson Jr., a defensive lineman, led Central in tackles with 63, tackles for loss with 15and quarterback sacks with 11 to go with one fumble recovery.
Gingham and Blakeney were linebackers. Gingham had 58 tackles, four TFLs, one sack, one interception, four pass breakups and one forced fumble. Blakeney had 35 tackles, one TFL and one FR.
Moore, a middle linebacker, made the All-Region team despite being limited to just five games due to injury. He had 26 tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack and one fumble recovery.
Tray Wilson made the team as a running back. He led the Eagles with 806 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 81 carries while catching 24 passes for 383 yards and two touchdowns.
Covington, a defensive lineman, had 47 tackles, four tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble.
Ashten Wilson, a running back, ran for 464 yards and three touchdowns on 57 carries to go with four catches for 69 yards.
Allen, a running back ran for 101 yards on 13 carries and had two catches for 39 yards. He also returned a punt for a touchdown and had an interception on defense.
Rollins made the team as an offensive lineman.
Davis, a defensive back, had 33 tackles, five TFLs and one forced fumble.
Although the Eagles went just 3-8 this season and lost in the first round of the state playoffs, head coach Shane Griffin was grateful for what his senior class did for the program.
“The senior class football players embodied resilience, dedication and leadership, leaving an indelible mark on our football program,” said Coach Griffin, who just completed his second season in charge. “Their commitment on and off the field set a standard of excellence for future generations to emulate.
“These senior athletes brought more than skill to the game. They brought a spirit that fueled camaraderie and sportsmanship. Their passion for the sport and unwavering teamwork have not only contributed to the success of our football program but have forged lasting memories that will resonate within the hearts of fans and teammates alike.”
VOLLEYBALL
Junior Tori Brandon was selected to the All-Region 5 volleyball team.
Brandon led the Eagles with 85 kills, 28 service aces and 31 blocks to go with 96 digs and 210 serves received with just 20 errors.
CROSS COUNTRY
Central’s Luis Lopez earned a berth on the All-Region 5 boys cross country team with his performance in the region meet.
Lopez finished third in the individual portion the meet.
