North Augusta – The season did not start well for the Fox Creek High School boys basketball team. The Predators only won one of their first seven games. However, FCHS head coach Andrew Peckham thinks the difficult start may have paved the way for a great season.
“I’m very proud of this team and their continued improvement throughout the season,” said Peckham, whose team finished 20-11 on the season, won the Region 3-AA title and reached the quarterfinals of the state playoffs. “I think our tough non-conference schedule helped prepare us for region play. We won 14 out of our last 16 games to end the year, including a region championship over rival Strom Thurmond.
“We played six freshmen on varsity throughout the season, and it was neat to see them grow up as the season progressed.”
Fox Creek was led by senior Connor Cannon. He was selected to the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association AA All-State team, was named the Region Player of the Year and was picked to play in the North-South All-Star Game.
Cannon averaged 17.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.6 steals per game, all team highs.
“We will obviously miss Connor Cannon next season,” Peckham said. “He scored 1,295 career points, which broke the school record and makes him the all-time scoring champion.”
Also selected to the All-Region team were freshmen Kobe Sims and Chorsheak White and junior Brelan Baskett. Sims averaged 7.4 points, White averaged 8.6 points, and Baskett averaged 6.2 points and 5.9 rebounds.
With six players who played in at least 29 games returning, Peckham likes the trajectory of his team.
“The future is bright for our program. With so many underclassmen gaining valuable experience this season, it bodes well, especially going into AAA next year. We will have a goal to contend for another region championship against some tough region opponents in Keenan, Newberry, Silver Bluff and Swansea.”
FOX CREEK GIRLS FINISH 7-16
The Fox Creek girls finished with a 7-16 overall record. The Predators finished third in Region 3 with a 4-4 record. They lost to Mid-Carolina in the first round of the state playoffs.
Fox Creek had two players named All-Region in freshmen Jada Jennings and Maya Kryshtalowych. Jennings led in scoring with an 11.4 average and steals at 2.5. Kryshtalowych tied for the team lead in rebounding at 8.5 with older sister Sofia Kryshtalowych. She also averaged 7.2 points.
