Camden – If you didn’t know better, you’d think Camden High School’s football team has a regular-season game against Dillon on its schedule in the month of November.
For the third straight year Camden and Dillon will be squaring off in November, but there is nothing regular season about this. This is a second-round AAA state playoff matchup on November 10 in Dillon between two of the perennial powers in the classification.
“It seems like Camden and Dillon went the longest time without playing each other and now they’ve faced each other each of the last three years,” said Bulldogs head coach Brian Rimpf. “We played for lower state two years ago (a Camden win in 2021) and in the third round last year (a Dillon win).
“When these two teams meet you know there’s a pretty good chance of the winner between those teams going all the way to the end (in the state championship game).”
Camden, which finished second in Region 6, blew out Dreher 48-7 in the first round to improve to 8-3 on the season That moved the Bulldogs back into the top 10 of the High School Sports Report AAA Sweet 16 poll at No. 10.
Dillon is 10-1 and ranked second in AAA after a 42-8 first-round win over North Charleston.
Rimpf was pleased with how the Bulldogs played against Dreher.
“We played really well on defense, taking two interceptions back for touchdowns,” he said. “On offense, we really found our footing in the passing game. We only ran the ball 18 times while (quarterback Grayson White was) passing for 313 yards and four touchdowns.”
One of those touchdown passes was a screen pass to Jo Jo Crim, who earlier in the game returned an interception for a touchdown. Wyatt Thompson had the other Pick 6.
“It was a really good night to be a Bulldog,” Rimpf said.
He hopes to be able to say the same after facing Dillon.
“They're explosive on offense,” Rimpf said of Dillon. “We’ve got to limit the big plays. We can’t be giving up plays of 50, 60, 70 yards.
“Defensively, they’re going to try and make you drive the field They’re very physical on defense.”
White now has 33 touchdown passes on the season and 2,892 passing yards.
Entering the playoffs, wide receiver Jah Mayrant had 52 catches for 1,012 yards and 10 touchdowns. Aiden Heriot had 30 catches for 707 yards and eight scores, and Maxwell Ford had 24 catches for 480 yards and seven touchdowns.
Running back Averee Hickmon had 591 yards and eight touchdowns on 100 carries to lead the team. White, who had a rushing touchdown against Dreher, had 461 yards and seven scores on 71 carries.
