Roebuck – Going 21-8 on the season, finishing second in your region and reaching the third round of the state playoffs is a great season for almost any high school basketball program.
Well, maybe not by Dorman standards. That’s what the Cavaliers accomplished this season though, and in all truthfulness, head coach Thomas Ryan has nothing but praise for his squad.
“I thought this team exceeded my expectations considering we lost four starters from last year's team,” said Ryan, who guided DHS to the AAAAA state crown the previous season. “And really only Christian Andrews and Keenan (Arecega-Whiteside) had ever played any meaningful varsity minutes coming into the season.”
Ryan, who has led Dorman to five AAAAA titles in eight years, led it to a 5-3 finish in Region 2. The Cavaliers cruised to a 53-38 home win over White Knoll in the first round of the playoffs. They then went on the road and beat Region 3 champion Blythewood 63-58 before falling to Region 1 champion Mauldin 58-55 in the quarterfinals.
Andrews was named to the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association’s AAAAA All-State team. The senior averaged 15.0 points, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game while shooting 76 percent from the free throw line.
He was joined on the All-Region team by Arcega-Whiteside, a junior, and senior Christian Gentry. Arcega-Whiteside shot 56 percent from the floor while averaging 10.0 points. He also averaged 8.0 rebounds. Gentry averaged 10.0 points and 3.9 assists.
DORMAN GIRLS FINISH 18-10
The Dorman girls basketball team went 18-10, finished third in region play and went on the road to pick up a first-round playoff win.
The Cavaliers went 5-3 in the region and had to open at Lexington in the first round. They came away with a 55-54 win before losing to Mauldin 61-41 in the second round.
The Cavaliers had a balanced scoring attack. Although only one player ended up averaging double figures in points, there were five others who averaged between 6.8 points and 9.0 points per game.
Sophomore Morgan White led the team in scoring at 11.2 while averaging 7.5 rebounds. Senior Nakiyah Kelly was the leading rebounder at 9.2 while averaging 8.1 points.
Sophomore Rihanna Wallace averaged 9.0 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.1 steals. Senior Jenna Cothran averaged 7.9 points and freshman Makayla Moore added 6.8 points and 2.4 assists.
Freshman Kimora Evans averaged 8.0 points and 3.4 steals in 14 games.
