Hartsville – The winter sports campaign has officially ended at Hartsville High as spring sports take center stage for the next three months.
Wrapping up the winter sports season, Hartsville enjoyed solid success in wrestling and girls basketball, while a young boys team laid the foundation for a better future.
In wrestling, the boys and girls teams each qualified several grapplers for the state individual championship tournaments.
Qualifying for the AAAA tournament in boys were Jackson Chavis, Zachary Lynch, Elijah Wilson and Tyrese Mitchell. Chavis was the top performer at the state meet, capturing the championship in the 285-pound weight class. It was Chavis’ second state title as he also won two years ago.
Lynch wrestled in the 132-pound weight class with Wilson competing at 157 pounds. Mitchell wrestled in the 215-pound division.
From the girls team, qualifying for the state open invitational were Aaliana Peterson (130), Aaron Anderson (190), and Rylee Berghorn (235). Berghorn took home the silver medal after losing in the state finals.
The girls basketball team had a great season, posting and 21-8 record and finishing second in region 6-AAAA with an 8-2 league record. Hartsville lost in the second round of the AAAA Lower State playoffs to Ridge View, 55-48.
Senior Jazzy Frierson, a class AAAA all-state selection, finished the season with a 15.5 points per game scoring average. She also averaged 6.1 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 4.1 steals per game.
Senior forward Tatiana Fisher averaged 10.1 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. Junior Brooke Mitchell added 10.7 points and 6.7 boards per outing, and freshman Jaz Reyes averaged 7.3 points per game.
While Frierson and Fisher will be missed, coach Justin Johnson made sure to play a bevy of underclassmen that will be ready to accept bigger roles next season. Among those underclassmen were freshmen Chaniya Thompson and Zenaria Gibson, along with eighth-grader Trinity Johnson.
Freshmen Ariel Leatch and Ja’Niya Hickmon also will step into bigger roles next season.
The boys team managed just four wins this season and did not earn a playoff opportunity. Junior EJ Smith led the Red Foxes in scoring at 8.4 points per game. Senior Jermaal Brown averaged 7.1 points per game while senior Shaquan Pendergrass was good for six points per game. Freshman Kayson Dawson scored 7.0 points per game.
Other seniors on the boys roster this season included Zion Pettus, Harry McCoy, Tyriq Fisher and Kelvin Reed.
