North Charleston – It was a festive night at Fort Dorchester High School as former football
head coach, athletic director and icon Steve LaPrad was honored by having the Bagwell Stadium
named after him in the Patriots' first home game of the season.
New Head Coach Joshua Smith’s Patriots did not disappoint as they scored on their first seven
possessions of the game on their way to a 52-0 rout of the Berkeley Stags. The win improved the
Patriots' record to 2-1 while the Stags fell to 3-2.
“This being the home opener and a special night for coach LaPrad and his family, we wanted to
come out fast,” said Smith. “I told the guys in the in the locker room that this was going to be a special
night and I wanted us to start as fast as we can. Our guys responded and we picked up a big win.”
Fort’s first three possessions took a total of 1 minute, 34 seconds, as it scored 21 points. The first
score came when quarterback Charles Watson faked an inside handoff to the right and then headed
left, got outside, and raced 75 yards. The second came when Watson hit Jalen Barry with a 9-yard
scoring strike, and the third score came on a 62-yard run by Davian Brown. Eric Mittag added the
extra points.
The next two drives by Fort Dorchester lasted a bit longer but not much. The next drive took 1:46
off the clock and ended when Mason Rock hit Barry on a 12-yard fade route. The final drive of the
first quarter lasted 1:07 with Ryan Campbell covering the final 62 yards to make the score 35-0.
In the second quarter The Fort would add 10 more points on a Mittag 42-yard field goal and a
Watson-to-Monty Johnson 31-yard touchdown pass.
Berkeley was finally able to put a drive together on its last possession of the half when K’den
Foxworth ripped off a 21-yard run and a 34-yard pass from Henry Rivers to Andre Williams put the
ball at the Fort 6-yard line, but the Fort defense stopped the drive. The halftime score was 45-0.
The defense, led by the front four of Austin David, Camdon Kinlaw, Landon Whitlock and
Zamorie Hemmingway, was dominant the entire game as it shut out the potent Stags offense. In
the first half, five Berkeley possessions netted six yards.
“Defense was outstanding tonight. Berkeley has scored some points this year, so to shut them
out like we did, hats off to coach Floyd for putting together a good game plan,” said coach Smith.
The second half was played with a running clock and the only score was a 27-yard run by
Brown, his second score of the night.
The Fort will host fellow AAAAA power Gaffney next week while Berkeley will be at Berkeley
County rival Goose Creek.
