Dillon – The Donnell Stanley era for the Dillon Christian School football program has seen the good and the not so good all in the first two games.
The Warriors gave Stanley, the former University of South Carolina and National Football League offensive lineman, a victory in his first game as head coach with an impressive 21-14 win over Calhoun Academy on August 18. They followed that up with a 23-0 loss to Carolina Academy on August 25.
“I didn’t think the guys were as focused,” Stanley said. “There was not a lot of energy compared to last week. We had too many self-inflicted wounds. We just have to finish and handle adversity better.”
In the win over Calhoun, the Warriors fell behind 8-0 in the early going. Their first score was set up when quarterback Avery Sherman connected with wide receiver Jackson Outlar for a 42-yard pass. Sherman later scored on an 18-yard run. The 2-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the score at 8-6.
Sherman and Outlar teamed up again in the second quarter, this time for a 16-yard score. Running back Amir Boston ran for two points to make it 14-8.
Calhoun tied the game in the third quarter. Dillon Christian didn’t get the winning touchdown until late in the fourth quarter. DCS defensive back Shawn Locklear came up with an interception to thwart a Calhoun possession. With just 1:32 remaining in the contest, Locklear caught a 30-yard TD pass from Sherman. Outlar added the extra point for the 21-14 victory.
Sherman completed 11 of 28 passes for 161 yards with two touchdowns and had 25 yards on two carries with a touchdown. Outlar had 96 yards on five receptions with a touchdown and had 10 yards rushing, Boston had 34 yards on 12 carries and Locklear had three catches for 44 yards and the touchdown.
Colin Davis led the Warrior defense with 15 tackles and a quarterback sack. Jansiel Baez had 10 tackles with a sack, Braxton Cummings had eight tackles, and Locklear had six tackles with two interceptions.
Things obviously didn’t go quite as well against Carolina. Sherman only threw for 89 yards with Outlar being limited to just three catches for 18 yards. Locklear also had three catches, for 28 yards, while Zach Ellis had two catches for 35 yards and CJ Bailey had two catches for eight yards.
Boston had a solid game running the football, gaining 65 yards on eight carries.
Bailey had a strong game on the defensive side of the ball with eight tackles and an interception. Ron Bracey led in tackles with 10 while Cummings had five. Reese Bracey also had an interception.
