Goose Creek – The Vikings of Denmark-Olar snapped a two-game losing streak Friday night in a big way as they beat Ridge-Spring Monetta 64-18 to even their region record at 1-1 and move to 4-2 overall.
The Vikinga opened the season 3-0 by beating two Charleston area schools Baptist Hill 28-16 and St. John’s 24-6 and knocking off then number one Bamberg-Ehrhardt 22-15. The win against Bamberg-Ehrhardt moved the Vikings into the top 10 in Class A.
Then the injury bug hit the defense as the Vikings surrendered a late lead to Allendale-Fairfax in a 28-26 loss and then they dropped their region opener to Blackville-Hilda 34-13.
“We were a little banged up after the Bamberg game and it carried over for a couple of weeks. While the losses are not what we wanted, we did get some of our younger guys some game experience,” said Head Coach Jarvis Littlejohn.
Defensively, when healthy the Vikings have one of the top defenses in Class A. They are led by top junior prospect Tykeem Ross. He gets off the ball quick and at times he is unblock able. He also has been a big target on offense in the Viking passing game.
While Ross has been tremendous the rest of the defensive line has been the unmovable object at times with seniors Eric Burkett and Jamarion Wise and junior Reginald Youmans handling the opposing offensive lines. They have also been instrumental in the team’s offensive success.
The back seven have been good as well, causing turnovers and making big plays all season and they are led by senior linebacker Zachary Whetstone and junior Robert Bobain.
Treveon Hinton has played well all year at quarterback and is the leader of the team. He makes plays in the passing game and with his feet.
His top target has been junior Terrance “Agent Zero” Hinton. He turns short throws into touchdowns, gets tough yards in the run game and makes plays in the secondary.
“Terrance has a chance to be a special player. He has started to put in the work and the results have been on the field,” said coach Littlejohn.
Senior Jacques Donaldson has carried the load in the running game.
“We are still working to improve our communication on the field. We have gotten better. Once we get those things ironed out, we will be fine,” coach Littlejohn said.
The next two weeks will be crucial for the Vikings in the region race as well as playoff seedings. They host Calhoun County 5-1/1-1 and then go the road to Hunter-Kinard Tyler 6-1/1-1. If they can win both games, they will be in the driver’s seat to get a home playoff game.
