Chapin – Though they fell short of their goal of winning a state championship, the spring sports season was highly successful in most respects for athletes at Chapin High School.
At presstime, the Chapin softball remained alive in the 2023 postseason as one of the final four remaining teams in the AAAAA Lower State bracket. Other teams had seen their season ended by the middle of May.
The baseball team reached the district finals, earning a win over the defending state champions, Berkeley, before suffering two season-ending losses to the Stags in the district finals.
The boys soccer team was among the best AAAAA teams in the state but saw its season end with a second-round upset loss to Stall. The Eagles finished with a 17-4 record.
Freshman Jalen Tucker finished the season with 14 goals and nine assists while senior Carson Graves tallied 12 goals and seven assists. Senior Thomas Holstein added six goals and junior Griffin Ellis scored five goals. Sophomore keeper Will Robinson totaled 70 saves this spring.
The girls soccer team also won the region championship and finished with a 17-3 record overall. The season also ended with an upset loss, 1-0 to Blythewood, in the second round of the state playoffs.
Leading the girls team was freshman Lila Bowers with 12 goals and 17 assists. Junior Darcy Ahern added 12 goals and 13 assists while sophomore Macy Rogers scored eight goals with five assists. Sharing time in goal were junior Olivia Bradley and sophomore Addison Bagnall.
The boys lacrosse team finished its season with a 16-2 record losing to Wando in the third round of the lower state playoffs. Senior Tyler Green led the team in scoring this season with 76 goals and 28 assists. Junior Holden condray added 44 goals and 33 assists. Senior Grady Brandstatter finished the season with 26 goals and 27 assists, and junior Ethan Egge had 26 goals and 15 assists.
Scoring 20 goals each were junior Owen Salazar and sophomore Noah Norwood. Salazar also tallied 32 assists. Senior Isaac Marrone was 65% successful on face offs and senior goalkeeper Michael Hoos recorded 182 saves.
The girls lacrosse team posted an 11 and eight record this season, losing to Wando 12-10 in the third round of the lower state AAAAA playoffs.
Leading the offensive attack for the lady Eagles was junior Ava Claire Collins who scored 91 goals and had 16 assists. Sophomore Brooke Holmes added 63 goals and 13 assist while senior Caitlin Antley contributed 18 goals with 32 assist. Junior Lauren Buds scored 22 goals with six assists and junior Claire Cornelison scored 18 goals with six assists.
Junior Dakota Cheek was solid in goal, allowing 10 goals per game with 100 successful saves,
