Lamar – The staff of head coaches at Lamar High School has undergone some changes for the
upcoming school year. The newest head coaching hire is a familiar face.
Brian Scott, who has been helping his uncle, Randolph Scott, with the girls basketball team at
Lamar the past three seasons, is now in charge of the boys basketball team.
Brian Scott, the former high school football All-American at Darlington and a University of
South Carolina wide receiver standout, said getting this opportunity is an idea that has come to fruition.
“With my coaching experience prior to coming there, that's one of the things I wanted to do,” said
Scott, who has been a head coach in prior stops at Lee Academy and Marion. “I came in to help my
uncle with the girls, and yeah, you never know, one day the boys job might come open.
“The athletic director (Carlos Burgess) saw that it was time for a change,” said Scott, who is
taking over for Frankie Johnson Jr. “I was a candidate, went through the process, I did an interview, the
whole nine yards. I had a leg up on some of the candidates. That helped as well.”
While Scott’s All-American status at Darlington was in football, he had a very nice basketball
resume. He averaged 22.3 points for his career to go with 9.0 rebounds, 8.0 assists and 3.5 steals. He was
twice named All-State and was the most valuable player in the 1997 North-South All-Star Game.
Scott was the head coach at Marion from 2015-17, leading the Swamp Foxes to a region title
while being named region Coach of the Year.
“I feel good about it,” said Brian Scott. “It’s good to get back home (to Darlington County) and
get back around it. Basketball is basketball. It’s good to get back on the boys side. I’m going to coach
them up. With a lot of them being football players, I’ve had the chance (as a football assistant) to see how
they take coaching from someone besides myself. I get to see which buttons to push. The kids at Lamare
are hard-nosed, tough kids, We want to get the program back to being respected.”
Scott will be one of the assistants for first-year football head coach Stephen Burris, coaching the
wide receivers and defensive backs, Jason Myers will be the defensive coordinator and coach
linebackers, Rob Joye will coach running backs, Hayden Wilks the offensive line and Jimmy Woods
and Allan Poole will coach the defensive line.
Adam Fedawa is the new baseball coach, replacing Adam Windham, Francis Humphrey will
be the boys and girls cross country coach, Alan Hunter will handle volleyball, Shane Brantley will be
the softball coach, Myers will be the boys and girls track and field coach, and Traci Boatwright and
Tabitha Hudson will handle cheer.
