Hilton Head Island—While many people think of baseball and softball during the spring sports season, there are several other teams competing for region and state championships as well.
The Hilton Head High girls’ and boys’ track teams had a solid showing at the recent Beaufort Classic. The Lady Seahawks finished third in their division with 68 total points while their male counterparts were fifth with 61 points.
There were several top placers on the girls’ side, including a pair in the distance events. Freshman Tori Herman won the 1600-meters in a time of 5:20.12, and eighth-grader Sarah Cooke was victorious in the 3200-meters after crossing the finish line at 11:54.07.
Herman also teamed with Esther Anderson, Mallory Liggett and Isabel Muehleman to earn first place in the 3200-meter relay. Muehleman, a sophomore, was second in the 1600-meter run as well.
Senior Traci Brown scored points in two sprinting events, grabbing second in the 100-meter dash and third in the 200-meter dash. She also was a member of the 400-meter relay team – along with Jillian Goeman, AJ Morton and Tanashia Robinson – that came in fifth.
Sophomore Kiana Bolden earned a runner-up finish in the 400-meter run, and junior Miyah Shatz took fifth in the 1600-meter run. Other runners that competed at the meet included senior Carol Ann Rosenblum and freshmen Laura Huggins, Kaitlin Cooke, Kaitlyn Holland and Chynna Sneed.
The Hilton Head boys were led by senior Nahuel Coronel and sophomore Sterling White, who both captured top honors in individual events. Coronel won the 3200-meter run in a time of 10:18.44 while White needed just 51.83 seconds to finish the 400-meter run.
The relays were also strong for the Seahawks. Ben Gilman, Sam Gilman, Joshua Williams and Ja’Quell Williams combined to take first in the 3200-meters with a time of 8:11.06.
The foursome of PJ Franklin, Taquan Pope, Ja’Quell Williams and White were runners-up in the 1600-meters, and Nate Brown replaced Pope on the 400-meter relay squad that claimed sixth place.
Joshua Williams also had an individual third place finish in the 1600-meter run while Franklin took fifth in the 400-meter hurdles. Senior David Robinson (third in 3200-meter run) and junior Harvey King (fifth in discus) picked up points in their respective events as well.
Other athletes that participated at the classic included seniors Dajon Robinson and Jose Gayton, juniors Michael Stapleton and Chris Washington, sophomore Reggie McKinney, and freshman Ean Gardner.
In other news, four Hilton Head students will be honored at the upcoming HSSR winter sports awards banquet to be held April 23 at Seawell’s in Columbia.
Junior Kamryn Jackson was named to the Class 4A all-state girls’ basketball team after helping the Lady Seahawks to a region championship. She averaged 10.2 points, 3.5 steals and 2.1 assists on the season.
Bryce Singleton was tabbed to the Class 4A all-state boys’ basketball team after putting up outstanding numbers in 2016-17. The senior recorded 15.5 points, 5.9 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 4.0 steals per game.
A pair of junior grapplers will take home trophies as members of the 4A wrestling team as well. Alex Braden (138 pounds) and Billy Christie (170 pounds) each finished the season as state champions in their weight classes to earn the honor.
