Lugoff-Elgin softball hoping for growth

By Ken Buck

Lugoff—During the regular season Lugoff-Elgin Lady Demons softball Head Coach James Marlow was hoping his team would overcome their slow start and be ready for the post season.

Safe to say that with a state championship still possible, the Lady Demons have turned the corner in time for the playoffs.

Lugoff-Elgin won their district in the Class AAAA playoffs and now are in the midst of the state semi finals, along with Hartsville, Berkeley, and Beaufort.

The Lady Demons have already beaten Hartsville and Beaufort, and sit in the driver’s seat awaiting their final opponent for the lower state championship. That opponent will be either Berkeley or Hartsville.

Earlier in the season, Marlow pointed out that his team had had to face a number of injuries but were continuing to battle.

Sophomore Bailey Douglas is leading on the mound. She is 9-2 on the year with a 0.95 ERA in 66 innings with 48 strikeouts and only 15 walks. At the plate, she is hitting .333 and is second on the team with 29 RBI's, leads the team with 12 doubles on the season, and is tied for the team lead in triples with 4.

Senior first baseman Kelly Graham is hitting .443 and is the team leader with 10 HR's and 39 RBI's on the season. She also has 8 doubles and one triple on the season. Senior catcher Sophie Holland is hitting .402 and is second on the team with 4 HR's and 22 RBI's on the season to go along with 7 doubles.

In the playoffs, senior shortstop Erica Rawl has played great defensively committing no errors. Sophomore third baseman Kaley Goerlich is hitting .442 with two HR's, eight doubles, and 23 RBIs on the season.

Sophomore center fielder Savannah Grigsby has been a outstanding lead-off hitter for the team and is currently leading the team in hitting with a .519 average.

Sophomore Caitlyn Curry has had a solid year, hitting .478 with 22 hits and 15 RBI's in 46 at-bats.
