SCISA GIRLS BASKETBALL BATTLES TO BE COMPETITIVE In 2020-21

Goose Creek, S.C. – The South Carolina Independent School Association 2020-21 Girls basketball season has started with Cardinal Newman (3A), Hilton Head Christian (2A) and Beaufort Academy (1A) ready to defend their 2019-20 Championships.

Coach Asia Dozier has her Cardinal Newman Lady Cardinals off to a roaring 5-0 start to defend their title.  Last year the Lady Cardinals finished with a 24-1 record as they defeated Northwood Academy for the title.

Coach Dozier has seven players returning to help defend the title.  Ashlyn Watkins (jr) returns to lead the offense.  Last year she scored 411 points.  Another offensive threat will be Tanaja Kennedy (so) who scored 287 points last season.

The other returning players are Lakin Green (jr), Jasmine Hogan (sr), Erin Boyer (sr), Megan Holbrook (sr) and Alyce Etter (sr).

Coach Grinnell Curtis hopes to have her Northwood Academy Lady Chargers back to the title game this season.  Last season the Lady Chargers finished at 26-2.

The Lady Chargers are off to a 2-0 start as Coach Curtis has plenty of offensive power returning this season.  All six returning players can be explosive on offense.   Leading the way will be Alayah Birch (fr) who scored 373 points last season as an 8th grader.  KeAirra Gregory (sr) returns after scoring 315 points last season.

Amiyah Ferguson (so) at point guard scored 282 points last season followed by Anaya Manigault (sr) who scored 242 points.  The other returning players are Rachel Ambroise (jr) who scored 177 points and Aubrielle Harris (jr) who scored 147 points.

Coach Neil Minton hopes his Florence Christian Lady Eagles are ready to make it to the title game by improving on their 20-3 record.  The Lady Eagles are off to a 2-0 start to the new season.

Coach Minton has six returning players to build his hopes on this season.  Leading the way will be Kenzie Feagin (so) who scored 315 points last season.   Behind Feagin will be Kylie Stewart (sr) who scored 241 points last season.

Other returning Lady Eagles are Mary Margaret Sterling (so), Hilton Broach (jr), Emily Eason (sr) and Kaia Thompson (sr).

Coach Glen Rector hopes with nine returning players the Wilson Hall Lady Barons can improve on their 16-9 record and go deep in post-season.  The Lady Barons are off to a 4-1 start to the young season.

The returning Lady Barons are Lucy Matthews (jr), Becca Cromer (sr), Kaitlyn Smith (sr), Owings Holler (sr), Vivian Bryant (jr), Hayley Champion (sr), Gracyn Coker (sr), Andi Grae Wingate (sr) and Catherine Busch (sr).

Trinity Collegiate (3-0) and Pinewood Prep (5-1) are primed to have break-out seasons in Class 3-A.    The Pinewood Prep Lady Panthers finished at 7-12 last season and the Trinity Collegiate Lady Titans finished at 7-15.

Coach Kenny Conroy has his Hilton Head Christian Lady Eagles off and running to defend the Class 2-A title.   The Lady Eagles have started the 2020-21 season with a 5-0 record with hopes of improving on the 29-2 record from last season.

Three starters return for the Lady Eagles led by HSSR-SCISA A Player of the Year senior Dior Shelton who scored 20 points in the thrilling state title win over Spartanburg Christian last year. Skylar Smith is a returniing junior guard along with senior guard Mary Yanker. A few other key returnees include  sophomore guard Abby Peduzzi., Devon Yarde (fr),  Mackenzie Buchter, and Mikayla Kelca (fr).

Coach Wendy Duke at Spartanburg Christian hopes to improve on their 25-6 record to return to Championship Saturday.  The Lady Warriors are off to a 2-2 start to the new season.

Coach Duke has returning to lead the Lady Warriors Kaylee Knox (sr), Emma Knox (so), Mackenzie Spivey (sr), Synclair Dillard (sr), Sam Toney (sr) and Natalie Lambert (jr).

Coach Lilian Aldred hopes her Beaufort Academy Lady Eagles can improve on their 23-3 record and bring home another Class 1-A title.

She has seven players returning to defend the title.  The offense should be led by Mike’Ala Washington (so) who scored 336 points last season.  Behind her will be Tahleea Heyward (so) who scored 197 points and Mary Hanna Hiers who scored 132 points.

The other returning players are Chase Vaigneur (sr), Maeve Kalady, Shanese Bostick (sr) and Riley Gates (sr).

Coach James Kesler at Newberry Academy has his Lady Eagles ready to make a serious run for the Class 1-A title.   The Lady Eagles are off to an 8-0 start to the season.

  Coach Kesler is blessed with the return of Daja Taylor to the Eagles nest.  Last season at Oakbrook Prep Taylor scored 840 points.  She is very explosive from the point guard position and can be a one lady wrecking crew on defense.

Other returning players from last years 22-7 team are Cassie Gilliam (so), Caroline Senn (jr), Kailey Cheeks (jr), London Huggins (sr), Madison Rivers (jr), Bethany Sawyer (so), Allison Joyner (jr) and Baylee Kinard (so).

Coach Belinda McCoy has her Patrick Henry Academy Lady Patriots off to a 4-0 start with hopes of improving on their 19-4 record from last season.  She has eight returning players to build her hopes on.

The returning players are Phoebe Booding (so), Kaylee Bratcher (jr), Abbie Wiggins (sr), Madellyn McKenzie (jr), Stephanie Carrillo (sr), Harper Rice (so), Saniah Sexton (jr) and Logan Cone (jr).

Coach Chris Pouyat has his Cathedral Academy Lady Generals primed to improve on their 17-6 record from last season.  They are off to a 3-1 start to the young season.  He has five players returning that can put points on the board.

Matti Riddick (jr) returns after scoring 250 points last season.  Jalyn Almeida (fr) returns hoping to improve on her 224 points.  The two returning seniors, Charlotte Trollinger and Nicole Adams scored 197 and 113 points last season.  Carolina Malone (fr) is the other returning player who hopes to start building her offensive record.

Coach Kristina Graves at Wardlaw Academy has her Lady Patriots off to a 3-1 start with hopes of improving on their 17-10 record from last season.

Coach Graves only has one senior in Gracie Kervin.  The three juniors are Allison Burnett, Ashland Yonce and Jordan Williams.  The four sophomores are Taylor Rhinehart, Reaghan Whitlock, Summer Williams and Lainey Jainniney.   Rounding out the Lady Patriot roster are freshmen Sarah Berry and Aimee Spurlock along with Jane Walker Yonce (8th).
