Sandlappers Use Second Half Comeback & 2 TD's catches For Jalin Hyatt To Defeat North Carolina 28-17 in Shrine Bowl

 Sandlapers Overcome 10-7 Deficit At the Half To Rally In The Second Half For A 28-17 Win Over North Carolina 

Spartanburg--The Sandlappers, behind the pass receiving of Tenneessee bound Jalin Hyatt of Dutch Fork (6/197/2 TD's), the rushing of Rahjai Harris of Bynres (14-95-1TD), and the combined passing efforts of Sandlapper quarertbacks Mekele Colasurdo of Chapman and Garcia Mason of Carolina Forest (11-27-237, 2 TD's) scored a come behind 28-17 win over the Sandlappers in the 78th Shrine Bowl played at Wofford College December, 21st.

The win was the first for South Carolina since 2014 after both teams battled to a 10-10 a year ago.  After the big win head Sandlapper coach Dean Boyd told the media that he challenged his team at halftime to keep fighting and playing hard because they were only down 10-7 after having two punts blocked and giving up two intercepetions and a fumble. Coach Boyd said the Tar Heels could have easily been leading 28-7 at the half, and not by juist 10-7. The Sandlappers came out and played much better in the second half. 

Garcia, headed to East Carolina, took over quarterback duties in the second half following an injury to Colasurdo. Garcia responded well completing 7- of 19- passes for 153 yards an a touchdown. Hyatt's two touchdowns receptions were for 23- yards from Colasurdo with 1:12 left in the first period and a 72- yard catch with 7:39 left inthe third period that gave the Sandlappers their first lead at 14-10.

Hyatt was named the Offensive MVP for South Carolina and the Defensive MVP for the Sandlappers was Lauren's linebacker Duane Martin, a Louisville commitment, had 8 tackles and he showed good closing speed on his tackling. At 245 pounds Martin was also an effective running back at Laurens this seaosn. 

After the game head coach Dean Boyd of York High also gave a lot of praise to the Sandlappr offensive line for their effective blocking all game. The Sandlappers also rushed for 174 yards on 34 carries led by Harris who had 95 yards and a 23- yard touchdown. South Carolina totaled 473 yards of total offense compared to 173 for the Tar Heels. South Carolina holds a 45-33 edge in the over-all series.
