Annual SCACA Clinic underway in North Charleston

 

North Charleston – The Charleston Area Convention Center in North Charleston is hosting the 2019 annual clinic of the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association. The clinic began on Sunday and runs through Wednesday afternoon.

More than 6,000 coaches in all sports from all over South Carolina are attending lectures and rules meeting as the 2019 fall sports season quickly approaches.

Sunday night was the annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony and dinner. The SCACA inducted six coaches into the Hall of Fame and recognized the coach of the year in all sports for the 2018-19 school year.

The six Hall of Fame inductions were Mark Bedenbaugh, Steve Boyd, Doug Lowe, Debra Tolar, Gary Nelson and Barry Triplett.

Monday was full of lectures and meetings in several sports, including football, golf, tennis, baseball, soccer, volleyball, wrestling and strength and conditioning.

Highlighted lecturers included coaches from Georgia State, East Carolina and Fisher DeBerry in football; George Schaeffer of Charleston Southern in baseball; Chuck Rey of Winthrop in volleyball; and John Mark Bentley of Appalachian State in wrestling.

On Tuesday, cross country will hold its annual meeting, as will swim, basketball, lacrosse, football, soccer and cheerleading. Coastal Carolina’s coaching staff will address the football coaches and Stacy Vallee of Francis Marion will speak in softball.

Meetings related to financial planning and medical aspects also will take place during the convention. SCHSL commissioner Jerome Singleton and SCACA executive director Shell Dula also will speak to coaches regarding issues related to both organizations.
