Late comeback falls short in Summerville's 53-52 loss to Cape Fear Academy

North Charleston – Senior forward Shaq Davis led a spirited comeback for the Summerville Green Wave but the final result was a 53-52 loss to Cape Fear Academy in a first-round game at the 25th annual Rotary Roundball Classic.

Cape Fear guard Emmanuel Bonsu hit a driving layup as time expired to lift the Hurricanes to a 53-52 win over Summerville.

Davis, a 6-5 athletic forward, scored 31 points and hauled in 13 rebounds for Summerville, which dropped to 6-5 on the season. Davis scored 10 points in the final two minutes to bring Summerville back from a 15-point first-half deficit.

“We had a rough first half but fought back to make it respectable before half,” Summerville coach David Long said. “I have to give a lot of credit to our kids for fighting hard in the second half. We managed to finally get over the hump and get the lead but we came up one defensive stop short in the end.”

Summerville trailed 29-14 late in the first half before managing to cut the deficit to 32-22 by halftime. The Green Wave continued to whittle away at the lead but didn’t take their first second-half lead until Davis hit a pair of free throws with 33 seconds left to make it 50-49 Summerville.

Cape Fear hit a pair of free throws to grab a one-point lead with 14 seconds left before Davis answered with a basket with seven seconds remaining.

“Certainly we are disappointed tonight,” Long said. “We wanted to advance in the winner’s bracket. But this tournament, these close games, will help us learn and mature. We want to win but it is all about learning from our mistakes and growing as a team. The big thing is getting better for region play.”
