2021 SCISA state baseball rankings

Hammond Baseball Favored In AAA,

By David Shelton

Senior Writer

Moncks Corner – The 2021 high school baseball season is in full swing on the SCISA level and early indications are that Hammond, Cardinal Newman and Hilton Head Prep are the cream of this year’s crop of top teams.

Hammond and Cardinal Newman are odds on favorites to battle for the Class AAA championship later this spring while Hilton Head Prep could be the sleeper in AAA. Prep is competing during the region schedule in Class AA but will move up to AAA in the postseason.

In Class A, three-time defending state champion Dorchester Academy will have plenty of competition this season. Clarendon Hall is currently number one with an undefeated region record going into a game with AJA on March, 23rd.

In AAA, Hammond is the defending state champion and has two of the state’s top overall players returning in senior Reece Holbrook and junior Tucker Toman. Holbrook has signed with North Carolina while Toman has committed to LSU. The duo bring plenty of pop to the lineup, along with catcher Brig Brannon. Scoring runs should not be a problem but pitching consistency and depth will be an important factor.

Cardinal Newman has a very young, but talented, team this spring. Coach Charles Assey’s team is off to a 9-1 start.

“We have a lot of new faces on the field but they are competing pretty well for the most part,” Assey said. “Like everyone else at this level, depth is always important. We are still developing and putting things together. Hopefully we can make a run.”

Only one senior, catcher Patrick Boyle, is a full-time starter for Assey. Six of the top nine players are sophomores or younger. Freshman Austin Laughlin and senior Sam Corbett anchor the pitching staff. Another senior, outfielder Luke Robinson, has recently returned to the lineup after an illness, Robinson will provide offensive depth as a left-handed hitter.

Pinewood Prep has a solid club and should be the favorite in region 3-AAA, while Laurence Manning is the favorite in region 2-AAA.

Hilton Head Prep is off to a 10-0 start and coach Chris Wells recently earned his 300th career coaching victory. The Dolphins averaged 16 runs per game in the first 10 outings while allowing only five runs in those 10 games.

The AA race is wide open with the top contenders being Pee Dee, Lee, Williamsburg, Northside Christian and Dillon Christian.

Dorchester Academy has won the last three state titles in Class A and a fourth consecutive title was highly possible in 2020 had the Covid-19 pandemic not cancelled the season.

The Raiders still have some leftover experience from the 2019 title in seniors Brody Marchant, Noah Byron and Wyatt Judy.

Class A, however, will be highly competitive as Andrew Jackson, Clarendon Hall, St. John’s Christian, Patrick Henry, Holly Hill and Richard Winn have solid clubs.
