Top teams still alive as round two of the SCHSL playoffs begin on Wednesday

Moncks Corner – With the playoffs shortened by one round with only half of the usual teams qualifying, the SCHSL state postseason is in high gear as the second round begins.

The playoffs usually include 32 teams but the field began with only 16 teams on Feb. 20. First-round games have been completed and the second-round begins tonight (Feb. 24). We saw a handful of upsets in the first-round but none would be considered major since the field began with the top two teams from every region.

In AAAAA, the most anticipated boys matchup of the postseason will take place on Friday when the top two teams in the classification, Ridge View and Dorman, will meet in a second-round game that most feel is the state championship being played early. Ridge View won three straight AAAA state titles before moving to AAAAA this year while Dorman has won four straight titles in AAAAA.

Mauldin and Riverside meet in the other Upper State semi-final. Dutch Fork and 12-0 Goose Creek meet in one Lower State semi-final while Carolina Forest tangles with River Bluff in the other Lower State game. River Bluff advanced with a first-round win over previously undefeated Fort Dorchester.

In the AAAAA girls tournament, top-ranked and defending Upper State champion Clover takes on Ridge View in one Upper State semi, while Gaffney hosts Rock Hill in the other.

The Lower State has Sumter hosting 8-0 Summerville while Wando battles Lexington in the other semi-final.

Class AAAA’s girls sees region six rivals Darlington and Myrtle Beach meeting in one Lower State semi while North Myrtle Beach faces defending state champion North Augusta.

Top-ranked Westside and Greenville meet in one Upper State semi-final. South Pointe and Traveler’s Rest will face off in the other Upper State game.

Traveler’s Rest and Greenville are matched up in the boys AAAA Upper State semi’s while South Pointe and top-ranked A.C. Flora will meet in the other game.

In the Lower State, Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach will play in one semi-final while Hartsville and Aiken contest in the other bracket.

A big second-round matchup in the Lower State AAA boys bracket takes place on Feb. 24 as top-ranked Bishop England hosts fourth-ranked Marlboro County in one semi-final game. Orangeburg-Wilkinson and Oceanside Collegiate will play in the other Lower State game.

The Upper State has Keenan and Woodruff playing on one semi-final while Blue Ridge and Seneca play in the other. Seneca upset Mid-Carolina in the first-round.

In the AAA girls, Keenan and Blue Ridge meet in one semi-final while Southside and Lower Richland meet in the other. Southside and Lower Richland each posted first-round upsets.

Class AA’s Upper State semi-finals for girls has Christ Church taking on Blacksburg and Saluda facing Andrew Jackson. The Lower State semi-finals puts Buford against Silver Bluff and Philip Simmons against Marion.

For the boys, Christ Church and Landrum meet in one semi-final while defending state champion Gray Collegiate meets York Prep in the other Upper State semi.

The Lower State semi-finals have Legion Collegiate facing Wade Hampton, and Woodland taking on Andrew Jackson.

The Class A boys Lower State semi-finals will have defending Lower State champion Scott’s Branch taking on Hannah-Pamplico while undefeated Baptist Hill hosts Carver’s Bay.

The Upper State matchups have Southside Christian taking on Denmark-Olar, and Calhoun County taking on Great Falls.

In the girls Class A semi-finals, Lake View and Military Magnet meet in one Lower State game while Lamar takes on Estill in the other game.

The Upper State has defending state champion High Point playing host to Denmark-Olar in one game while McBee and Southside Christian play in the other semi-final.
